Hackers Rack Up $20,000 Phone Bill In Swampscott

SWAMPSCOTT (CBS) - Officials in Swampscott are trying to figure out who hacked into the Town Hall phone system.

Over the weekend of January 28th and 29th, someone racked up $20,000 in long distance calls to the United Kingdom and to the Philippines.

Swampscott Town Accountant Dave Castellarin says the normal bill is only about $1,300 a month.

The hacker remotely accessed three accounts, and then made more than 50 calls.

Castellarin says, "I guess what they do is they call into companies, and they get the voice-mail, and they kind of just play around with the voice-mail to try and get codes."

Verizon is pursuing the hackers.
