"We're not sure of the details of the incident at this point, however it appears that the oil truck was involved in a move backing down toward the dock," said Lt. Mark Gillespie of the Transit Police.
The 42-year-old man was taken to Quincy Medical Center and was pronounced dead around 4:38 a.m. The truck's driver was also taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
"There is no suspicion of foul play at this time. It appears to be an unfortunate accident," said Lt. Gillespie.
The victim's name has not been released. WBZ-TV was told he was a training for a new job at the Devaney Fuel Company.
Devaney is a family owned business from Newton. The company began contracting fuel deliveries two months ago for Boston's Best Cruises, the MBTA ferry operator. The ferry transported more than 300,000 people last year. It employs more than 100 people and uses contractors for various jobs.
Transit, Quincy and state police will work to find out if the accident was caused by a mechanical problem with the truck, an environmental issue at the dock, or by operator error.
Devaney Fuel was not ready to make a comment Friday morning. Boston's Best Cruises said their thoughts are with the victim's family.
