FITCHBURG (CBS) -- A Fitchburg police officer is recovering from smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at an apartment complex on Carriageway in Fitchburg Saturday morning. One resident was also hurt in the blaze.

Nine families were forced out of their homes. The Salvation Army of Fitchburg said they are being taken to a temporary shelter.

Flames were fierce were firefighters arrived around 7:30 a.m. but crews were able to knock down the three-alarm fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as well.

Saturday marks the second consecutive day in which a residence has caught fire in Fitchburg.

On Friday, one person was killed and two others were injured after flames ripped through a triple-decker home on Hartford Street.
