EAST BOSTON (CBS) – A driver has been charged in a fatal hit-and-run in East Boston on New Year's Day.

Police say 33-year-old Christopher Nalchajian of Lynn struck a man on Saratoga Street around 6 a.m. Sunday and then tried to walk away from the scene.

The man who was hit died in the street. His name has not been made public.

"The body was over there. It was there like in the street, in the middle of the street," a witness told WBZ.

One person who lives in the neighborhood says she heard the victim's screams.

"It was screams from the man and I heard like a loud thump and I thought it was a garbage can. I was like, 'Oh, someone's fighting.' We heard the scream, like it was bad. It was crazy, and then we heard like the car like running. And then it came back and I guess they hit the guy or something," Gracia Cabrera said.

Nalchajian was arrested and charged with operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident causing death-personal injury and vehicular homicide.

Neighbors say Saratoga is a dangerous street for pedestrians.

"It happens all the time over here, you know. Night time on the weekends, everybody drives like crazy, you know drunk," East Boston resident David Calderon said.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office says Nalchajian will be arraigned in East Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday.
