Daily Talker: Who Should Shovel?
Most of us want to forget last winter. Not just the snow, but all the shoveling. One Boston city councilor wants to protect some residents from having to shovel their sidewalks. The Globe says a resident told City Councilor Tito Jackson that an elderly neighbor had sold her home under the market rate just to get out of the city and out of shoveling. The 80-year-old woman was reportedly fined repeatedly last winter because she didn't clear her sidewalk. The rules posted on the city of Boston's website say residents have to remove snow from their sidewalks within three hours after a snowfall, or three hours after sunrise if it snows overnight. If you don't, you face a $50 fine. It's difficult for some older residents to shovel that snow. Last winter, it was difficult for even the most fit person to shovel all that snow. Jackson will propose an ordinance today that Boston residents over 60 should be exempt from shoveling the sidewalks surrounding their property after a storm. The ordinance would also exempt people with disabilities. Jackson hopes this ordinance will help boost jobs for young people too. He says they can be hired to shovel the snow. What do you think of his proposal? Should some residents be exempt from shoveling?
