Daily Talker: Lowering The Drinking Age
A New Hampshire lawmaker has filed a bill that would allow people between the ages of 18 and 20 to drink alcohol. But, they must be in the presence of an adult.
State Rep. Max Abramson says in his bill, underage drinking is a significant health problem that leads to car crashes and alcohol poisoning. By letting some teens drink in the presence of a "responsible adult" who is over 21, Abramson's bill states "younger people will no longer be initiated to alcohol consumption in the absence of adult supervision." Abramson says in Europe, where the drinking age is lower, teenage alcoholism is less prevalent compared to here in the United States.
State Rep. Renny Cushing agrees with this bill. He told Seacoastonline.com that he finds it ridiculous that his nephew, who served as a Marine in Iraq, was not old enough to have a drink with him when he returned home from combat. Many police chiefs disagree, saying this will only lead to more irresponsible and dangerous drinking.
What do you think about this bill? Should 18-year-olds be allowed to drink in the presence of an adult?
