Daily Talker: Christmas vs. Holiday

A war of words this holiday season over the word "Christmas." An American Legion post commander in New Hampshire says he's offended that a new school superintendent asked him to replace "Christmas" with "holiday" on fliers advertising a tree lighting ceremony. 72-year-old John Fletcher, who plays Santa Claus at the ceremony, says he has distributed similar fliers to local schools for years. Fletcher says he did not want to put "holiday" on the flier because the event was about a Christmas tree, not a holiday tree. The superintendent says the U.S. Constitution forbids a public school district from aiding, promoting or endorsing a particular religion or religious activity. Fletcher's wife whited-out "Christmas" on 250 fliers distributed to schools in two towns, but did not add "holiday."

What do you think? Should we use the word "holiday" instead of "Christmas?"
