"It's been two years in planning and design and fundraising and a lot of community involvement and it's finally happening," says Linda Jonash, the Greenway Conservancy's director of planning and design.
The $3 million dollar project is being paid for by mostly private donations and a $1.5 million grant from the Tiffany Co. Foundation, which will pay for landscaping. It will cost $3 per ride.
The carousel, which is slated to be completed by Labor Day, will not be typical. Creatures that will be featured on the ride include a sea turtle, a Peregrine falcon, a grasshopper and of course a lobster. "How can you have a carousel in Boston without a lobster," said Jonash.
It will also be the first handicap accessible carousel in New England.
