Colorful Sculpture Hoisted Above Rose Kennedy Greenway

BOSTON (CBS)  - A wave of color above the Rose Kennedy Greenway turned heads on Sunday.

Denise Orfanos watched the installation of Boston's newest artwork, and took in the final sculpture.

"It's like a rainbow, very beautiful, very inspiring," Orfanos said.

Construction crews hoisted up the piece Sunday morning. The nearby buildings hold up the lattice of specially made and specifically connected twine. One International Point at the 28th floor holds claim to the highest attachment point for the sculpture.

As a teaching opportunity, Lisa Rodriguez brought her kids to watch.

"They're very interested in engineering and also environmental initiatives, so I thought it was good opportunity," Rodriguez said.

Jesse Brackenbury, executive director of Greenway Conservancy, hopes the sculpture draws people into Boston and inspires them to walk the mile-and-a-half Greenway.

"To bring contemporary public art at this scale to really show what this city can do and show off this park," Brackenbury said.

The sculpture is the work of world renowned and Brookline-based artist Janet Echelman. She designs on the computer.

This project was two years in the making. Not only does it take into account movement and colors, but at night, different colored lights will illuminate from below for another effect.

Echelman admitted seeing the sculpture take form in person was overwhelming.

"It's completely beyond what I imagined," Echelman said.

The colors, lines and peaks represent the city's and land's history – from the ocean to central artery to today.

"Think of yourself as a person changing this environment," she said.

Private donations and grants paid for the project will hang until October.

Echelman has yet to name the sculpture. She invites people to contact her on Twitter with suggestions @JanetEchelman
