Boy Rushed To Hospital After Being Pulled From Chelmsford Pool

CHELMSFORD (CBS) – A five-year-old boy is recovering after a near-drowning at a backyard pool in Chelmsford.

Investigators say adults pulled the boy out after they realized he had "drifted under the water" in the pool at the Gorham Street home he was visiting.

A woman at the home performed CPR on the child. He was semi-conscious and breathing on his own when police, firefighters and EMS arrived.

He was flown to a Boston hospital by medical helicopter. His condition is not known.

Lt. Eric Seager of the Lowell Fire Department is familiar with making vital split second decisions."The decision is on you," Lt. Seager said. "So you better make it and the faster you make the decision and the right decision, then the better the possible outcome."

He was one of the three firefighters who worked to save an unresponsive three-year-old boy and two-year-old girl after almost drowning in a backyard pool in Lowell last week.

"Having one child unresponsive like that is always surprising and a difficult call, having two, it does sort of take you back a little bit," Lt. Seager said.

When firefighters arrived at the home on Freda Lane last Saturday, a registered nurse was already working on one child. Lieutenant Seager says the more CPR knowledge residents learn the better.
