Celtics' Olynyk Gets Taste Of Boston By Taking Ride On Green Line
BOSTON (CBS) - The Green Line is getting a new feature, so it was only fitting that a Boston Celtic was on hand to help show it off.
Celtics first-round pick Kelly Olynyk was on hand Thursday when the MBTA showed off its new electronic message board that will display which Green Line trains will be next to arrive at Kenmore Station. The seven-footer got to ride the Green Line from Kenmore to North Station, a stop he and Celtics fans will be very familiar with come basketball season, promoting the use of public transportation.
The 22-year-old from British Columbia says he is getting a feel for his new city, and is happy to help the community.
"It's always great to give back and it's always great to interact with fans and the people of Boston, because they're what makes us run," said Olynyk. "Their support and love for the team, it helps us and pushes us to go as hard as we can. Also being new to the city it's nice to get out and learn my way."
Olynyk, who was selected 13th overall out of Gonzaga, is still getting used to Boston, and hopes to have a handle on it at some point this year. But even life-long residents know it's not the easiest of cities to navigate.
"Sometimes I feel like I know and then all of a sudden I'm lost," Olynyk said with a big smile. "I get a little overconfident sometimes, but Boston will do that to you I guess."
"I'm really embracing it," he said of Boston. "I'm trying to get my face out there and interact with fans. It's a great place and I'm happy I'm here."
Olynyk got a tour of the stations and was shown the ropes of the T by MBTA secretary Richard Davies, who also calls Gonzaga his alma-mater.
The Celtics open training camp on October 1 in Rhode Island, and Olynyk is excited to get started. But he wouldn't divulge if he has any plans at cutting his famous locks.
"We'll see what happens in the future," he said.
