Neighbor Helps Residents Escape Brighton Apartment Fire
BOSTON (CBS) - No one was hurt in a fire at a Brighton apartment building early Thursday morning, thanks in part to a quick-thinking neighbor.
The man was woken up by a smoke detector going off at the triple decker on Waverly Street around 2 a.m.
He woke his wife and dog up, then knocked on other neighbors' doors, helping them get out before all three floors caught fire and the rear porches collapsed.
Eight people, including the man and his dog, all escaped safely.
"Obviously, the conditions were a bit on the hot side so the companies had to take a break, so we had extra companies come in," District Fire Chief Igor Verbitzki told reporters.
Kylie Davis, who lives next door, told WBZ-TV she looked outside her window, saw heavy flames and quickly called 911. She's thankful the fire didn't spread, but she feels for the families involved, especially during the pandemic.
"It's hard given Covid and everything and you have to be home. My heart just breaks for them. If there's anything we can do to help, we want to," said Davis.
There's no word yet on how or where the fire started.
The Boston Fire Department said damage is estimated at around $150,000.
