Shalane Flanagan, Daniel Chebii Win Boston Athletic Association 10K

BOSTON (CBS) -- An American Olympic marathoner training for the Rio Olympics and a man from Kenya won the women's and men's races in the 6th annual Boston Athletic Association 10K Sunday morning.

Women's race winner Shalane Flanagan, 34, of Portland, Oregon, finished the race with a time of 30:52, making her the new American record holder for a women's 10K road race.

Men's race winner Daniel Chebii, 31, of Kenya, finished with a time of 27:55.

"I am happy to be champion," Chebii said, according to a BAA release. "The race was very good, everything was very nice. My first time to the United States, and I get the victory today, become the champion of Boston."

Flanagan, who grew up in Marblehead, said that, along with fellow Olympic Marathoner Amy Hastings Cragg, who finished 3rd Sunday morning, she runs 120 miles each week in preparation for the Rio Olympics.

"This is my hometown, so I felt like it's a home game," Flanagan said just minutes after winning the race. "I just felt like I had to put my best foot forward."

The winner of this year's Boston Marathon, Atsede Baysa, finished 14th in the women's race Sunday with a time of 33:59.

After the awards ceremony, Bobbi Gibb, the first woman to finish the Boston Marathon in 1966, returned Baysa's Champions' Trophy, which Baysa gave to Gibb after her win in April.

"At the Boston Marathon, this beautiful, beautiful woman who won the race read about my story and she was so moved that she gave me her trophy, and there wasn't a dry eye in the room at the time," Gibb said during the ceremony. "I of course accepted it, and I said I would hold it for a while, but of course I want to give it back to her, as it rightfully belongs to her."

New Jersey's Tony Nogueira won the men's wheelchair race with a time of 22:55, and Massachusetts's Carla Trodella won the women's wheelchair race with a time of 1:07:34.
