Fry it. Drizzle it. Dunk it, and smother it. If it's fries smothered in cheese and gravy, there's no way you can resist it. These are the 8 Greatest places Phantom has found for poutine.
Kicking off the Great 8 is the Barrel House in Beverly. This dimly lit space on Cabot Street serves craft cocktails and a unique take on French-American cuisine. Their poutine is certainly a spectacle. Served in a cast iron skillet, this pile of crispy truffle fries gets amped up with the help of cheese curds, bacon, stout gravy, and the option for a fried egg on top.
The Charlestown Rathskellar in Charlestown, Rhode Island is a sprawling space with a cozy dining room, and a fun outdoor space to help work off the calories you just consumed. A must order during any visit to the Rathskellar is the house cut fries smothered in short ribs and gravy, tossed in truffle oil and pecorino cheese; or loaded up with bacon, cheddar, sour cream and chives, all baked until bubbly.
dNB Burgers is a funky fast food alternative just steps from the port of New Bedford. While the specialty of the house may be burgers, it's the hand cut fries that are most impressive, and they're available in a variety of poutine styles. The Classic version is smothered with cheese curds and beef and cheddar gravy. The New Bedford version adds a layer of house made chourico. There are even specials like Chicken Cordon Bleu poutine with Swiss Mornay sauce, house cured ham, and butter toasted bread crumbs.
2 Jerks in Raynham is a casual barbecue joint specializing in all things cooked slow and low, like perfectly smoked wings, tender St. Louis Ribs and juicy brisket that's sliced to order. Then there's the Southern style poutine, featuring a big bowl of crispy tater tots, piled high with pulled pork, smothered with country gravy.
Clean Plate in Providence is a casual spot serving crazy comfort food combinations for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nothing is wackier or tastier than Clean Plate's poutine pizza, complete with crispy Julienne fries, pulled pork with bacon jam and thick, smoky paprika gravy, topped with fresh cheddar cheese curds from Vermont.
Another Great 8 winner is the 110 Grill. With locations in Nashua, New Hampshire and Chelmsford, Massachusetts, the 110 is a lot nicer than most neighborhood pubs, with a menu that's way more creative, including dishes like a deliciously different tater tot poutine.
South End, Boston
Boston Chops in the South End is a modern steak house sporting high ceilings, dim lighting and a bustling bar. While it's the steaks that you come for, you'll certainly stay for the sides, like the Poutine Style Twice Baked Loaded Potato. It's injected with house made gravy, topped with pork belly, cheese curds, scallions and chives, and then garnished with two crispy potato skins.
Ogie's Trailer Park
Rounding off the Great 8 is Ogie's Trailer Park in Providence. This throwback space is like walking straight into a time machine, with sputnik chandeliers, vintage seating and lava lamps bubbling behind the bar. The menu is just as festive, with six varieties of tater tots, topped with everything from Italian Grano Padano cheese, to French-Canadian style with fried bacon strings, goat cheese, gravy and an egg served sunny side up. You can even go All the Way with heaps of chili, onion, béchamel and yellow mustard.
