Auburn Police Warn Of Scamming Contractors

AUBURN (CBS) -- Auburn police are warning residents to steer clear of possible scamming contractors going door-to-door, looking to cut a quick deal.

Police are asking residents to be wary of potential driveway paving scams following the arrest of an out-of-state man, according to the Auburn Police Department Facebook page.

Michael K. Johnson, 35, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Johnson and his possible partner, Jonathan E. Johnson, 27, of Charlotte, North Carolina, were knocking on doors, offering sealcoating services, police say.

Neither of the men had permits to solicit business from homeowners.

The scam typically involves a suspect saying they have "left over" coating material, police say, and he or she offers to seal the homeowner's driveway.

After being paid, suspects will then spray an inexpensive oily material on the driveway and quickly leave.

Homeowners should call police if they encounter a non-permitted solicitor.
