Aly Raisman Announces Plan To Train For Tokyo 2020 Olympics

BOSTON (CBS) – Six-time medalist Aly Raisman announced Wednesday that she is aiming to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The Needham native said in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that she wants to take a year off before she starts training for what would be her third Olympic games.

Raisman would be 26 in 2020. She only needs one more medal to tie Shannon Miller's record of seven among U.S. gymnasts.

"I thought I was in the best shape of my life in 2012, but it's even better now," Raisman told DeGeneres. "I'm excited to see what can happen in 2020."

Raisman was part of the gold-medal winning "Final Five" in Rio, and also won silver in the all-around competition and floor exercise. At the London 2012 Olympics, Raisman won gold in the team competition and floor exercise, plus a bronze on the balance beam.

Team USA says that if Raisman were to make the team in Tokyo, she'd be the first U.S. women's gymnast since Dominique Dawes to appear in three straight Olympic games.
