'I'm Completely Broken': Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Adrianne Haslet Hit By Car
BOSTON (CBS) - Boston Marathon bombing survivor Adrianne Haslet underwent surgery Monday at a Boston hospital after being hit by a car in a crosswalk on Commonwealth Avenue January 5.
"If there's a fairness in this universe one wonders where it is," said Thomas Grilk, the executive director of the Boston Athletic Association.
Haslet posted a picture on Instagram lying in a hospital bed and posting, "Thrown in the air and landed, crushing the left side of my body. Yesterday. I'm completely broken, more surgery to come."
Her brother posted on Facebook that she dislocated her shoulder and suffered three broken bones.
"She is one of the most positive people I have ever seen. She has driven herself forward that way," said Grilk.
After losing her left limb in the 2013 bombings, Haslet was training to run the Boston Marathon again this year. She completed the race in 2016, but didn't make it to the finish line last year.
"It's a major trauma and there's no way to minimize that," said Dan Fitzgerald, her running coach and owner of Heartbreak Hill Running Company. He says 14 weeks from the marathon she was ramping up her runs and this year it wasn't just to finish, but to perform. "She has big goals for herself including scoring in her own division. We were hoping to attack those," said Fitzgerald.
Grilk says her inspirational work as a professional dancer turned motivational speaker makes Saturday's accident a bitter irony. The driver was cited for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. "For Adrianne to be crossing the street in her own neighborhood and have something happen again, something imposed externally," said Grilk.
Boston police say dark and rainy conditions may have been a contributing factor. Fitzgerald says no one underestimates Haslet's resiliency but is taking a wait and see approach about her training. "As a coach I'm staid and steady. I say get healthy and see what we can do from there."
