76-Year-Old Volunteer Charged With Stealing $500 From Weymouth Church

WEYMOUTH (CBS) - A long-time church volunteer is charged with stealing from a Weymouth church's donations.

Police say they videotaped 76-year-old Wilbert Nickerson taking the money from St. Jerome Parish.

When they confronted him, Nickerson had about $500 in his pocket. Investigators have suggested that he may have taken more money at other times.

Nickerson was in court on Monday and has been released on personal recognizance.

The archdiocese of Boston sent a statement via email.

"While we are unable to get into any specifics, given it is an ongoing police investigation, the Archdiocese is working with St. Jerome Parish and Weymouth police to resolve this matter as soon as possible," said spokesperson Terrence Donilon. "In addition to seeking restitution for the parish, the Archdiocese has been, and will continue to, assist the parish in the implementation of additional measures on St. Jerome's already robust practice of safeguarding the collected contributions after each Mass."
