Star Spangled Stories: Harriet Tubman’s history in Maryland

Harriet Tubman, a Marylander known for freeing slaves, was also a veteran. Disguised as a farm hand or an old woman, she scouted southern plantations to create a spy ring that gathered intel for the Union army. In 1863, she became the first woman in the nation’s history to lead an armed military operation.
