Severe storms in Maryland cause damage, uproot trees in some communities
A strong storm powered through Maryland on Wednesday, uprooting trees in some communities and bringing heavy downpours.
The line of storms contained damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph, along with lightning, blinding rainfall, and hail.
Trees fall during severe weather
Along Bowers Avenue in Baltimore, a tree toppled over on a car and a home.
Shaniyah Stewart said their front porch took the brunt of the damage, along with their two-family cars, which got crushed.
"Crying, a lot of crying, anxiety, just disbelief," Stewart said.
Stewart said her mom and siblings were home during the storm, and she didn't arrive until 10 minutes later. Her cousin offered her a place to stay.
They were upstairs, my mom was in the back, and it happened in the front," Stewart said. "Luckily, everyone was safe when I came home."
The Stewarts and their neighbors said they have long been concerned about the tree that has loomed over the street.
Neighbor Michael Moore said on numerous occasions that the tree has been groomed after complaints to Baltimore City. He said there hasn't been enough to minimize the dangers, especially when a strong storm moves through.
"I've called about it all the time, and when they come and do the tree, I ask them to cut more off, and they don't do that," Moore said.
Moore said that, over the years, the city replaced the concrete over the roots as they continued to grow and crack the sidewalk, but never did anything for the tree.
On Ellwood Avenue in Baltimore, a downed tree fell across the road.
On Piedmont Avenue in Baltimore, a tree toppled over onto a vehicle.
Ground stop at BWI Airport
A ground stop was issued for flights at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI) due to thunderstorms.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the ground stop was lifted around 9 p.m.
