Record travel numbers expected during Memorial Day weekend, per AAA

A record 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles this Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA — but they could be dealing with packed highways, crowded airports, and higher travel costs.

At BWI on Friday, long lines stretched through terminals as travelers departed for weekend getaways. This year's rush is also coming with higher prices and fewer budget flight options.

"It's more expensive, and there are less flights out with things closing down,"  said Ryland Cordier, a Baltimore resident.

Spirit Airlines shut down operations in early May, eliminating one of BWI's largest low-cost carriers just ahead of the busy summer travel season.

Industry analysts say the loss of a major discount airline could mean fuller flights and higher fares for travelers.

AAA expects more than 39 million Americans to drive this weekend, but gas prices are still significantly higher this year compared to recent years. This has caused some Marylanders to rethink their plans.

"To be honest with you, I'm just going to stay home and save my money, because it's scary. You know, you don't know what turn this is going to take," said Kassim Conteh, a West Baltimore resident.

Expect heavy travel throughout the weekend

Those who are flying say they're simply preparing for delays and crowds.

"Get here early and pray for the best!" said Kiea Johnson, another Baltimorean.

Also, at BWI, the travel rush is getting an added boost from thousands of Naval Academy families leaving Maryland after commissioning week wrapped up in Annapolis Friday morning.

"I usually don't travel on Memorial Day weekend, so I would anticipate it to be busy…a lot of people are trying to get out right now," said Jake McGowan, a member of the USNA 2026 graduating class. "So, it is pretty slammed, but it should work out."

AAA and transportation officials say the heavy traffic is expected again on Monday as people return home.

Travelers flying out of BWI are encouraged to arrive early and check flight statuses before heading to the airport.
