Md. State Racing Commission Approves Off-Track Betting
TIMONIUM, Md. (WJZ) -- Betting on horse races from around the world. Despite significant opposition, the Maryland Racing Commission approves off-track betting at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium.
Tracey Leong explains the decision comes with plenty of controversy.
There are many people who live near the Fairgrounds who are not happy, despite the unanimous vote of approval from the Maryland Racing Commission.
Timonium joins a multi million dollar industry; off-track betting has been approved year-round at the Maryland State Fairgrounds.
"Such a great shot in the arm for us," said Andy Cashman, Maryland State Fair.
Wagering on horse races around the world, seven days a week, joining Laurel Park, Pimlico Race Course and the Horseshoe Casino.
The new facility at Timonium is expected to boost the local economy and sales for the surrounding businesses.
"Projecting anywhere from $500,000 to $600,000 a year," said Cashman.
The revenue will be split among the Fairgrounds, Jockey Club and Maryland Thoroughbred Horseman's Association.
Those opposed to off-track betting year-round at the State Fairgrounds are concerned with the potential problems it could bring--traffic being the main issue for those who say it's already congested around the Fairgrounds.
"Two-hundred more patrons with off-track betting is just going to exasperate the traffic," said Erik Rockel, Greater Timonium Community Council.
Rockel represents those betting against the success of the new facility and points out it may attract an unwanted crowd to their neighborhoods.
"They wonder whether increased vandalism will happen in conjunction with this," he said.
Currently, off-track betting happens for only ten days in Timonium during the State Fair, and protesters are working to keep it that way.
The area is not zoned for off-track betting year-round. The Baltimore County Council is planning a public hearing on March 1 for further discussion.
Off-track wagering has been a part of the Maryland State Fair since 1980, but never year-round.
