Maryland woman arrested for several home break-ins caught on camera

A Maryland woman was arrested after she was caught on camera breaking into multiple homes in Anne Arundel and Howard counties, according to law enforcement officials.

Shannon Gough, 43, was charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft, and destruction of property after a string of burglaries from Severna Park to Ellicott City, Howard County Police said Monday.

Charging documents obtained by WJZ said Gough primarily stole jewelry and electronics from the homes.

"Sometimes people think, 'Well, this is a property crime.'" said Anne Arundel County Police spokesperson Justin Mulcahy. "It's a lot more than that, you're damaging somebody's peace of mind and their security and their safety, so we're obviously glad that we made the apprehension."

Howard County police said Gough burglarized a home in the 3600 block of Blue Hill Court on September 10 and another home in the 5200 block of Kerger Road on September 17.

According to Anne Arundel County Police, Gough was connected to another break-in that occurred in the 100 block of Jennings Road in Severna Park on September 17.

A neighbor across the street says he was home when the incident occurred.

"Maybe if my car wasn't in the driveway, who knows, maybe they could have thought nobody was home, and it could have been our house?" Zach Leizear said.

A judge denied bail for Gough this afternoon, citing her lengthy criminal history.

More charges possible in Baltimore County

A Catonsville woman believes Gough will soon face charges in Baltimore County.

Michelle Claiborne's home on Johnnycake Road was targeted in May by a woman trying to break in with a crowbar.

She was caught on camera walking up to Claiborne's home, disappearing behind the house, before running away minutes later.

After rushing home, Claiborne saw that a side window was broken and bloody gloves were left on the ground.

She said county police took a report, but she hadn't heard anything for months. After seeing WJZ's story about the homes targeted in two other counties, Claiborne began to connect the dots.

"Part of me feels like my story was put on the back burner for the last couple of months. I would just love to know how hard they were looking," Claiborne said.

Claiborne said that in the past few days, the county's police department reached back out asking to share the home security video again.

"The officer I spoke to said he wasn't sure if something happened with the evidence room, I think that's the word he said, but I did have to resend it, which annoyed me a little bit because I sent that in the day it happened," Claiborne said.

An investigator with Baltimore County Police called Claiborne on Tuesday, saying charges against Gough were being "written up" in this case. That detective told Claiborne that Howard County Police were able to match the woman with the video evidence.

DNA evidence is also in process, according to Claiborne.

Moving forward, Claiborne said she hopes Baltimore County Police will keep victims in the loop.

"Even if it's just the smallest detail. It gives you peace of mind. Your house is your sanctuary," Claiborne said. "You're supposed to be able to come home and not worry about anything. But, days following any ring alert that came up on my phone, I was [worried], Is somebody at my house?"

Baltimore County Police did not confirm the additional charges, saying it cannot comment on charges until they are officially filed.

Gough is due back in court in Anne Arundel and Howard counties in October.

Tipsters recognize suspect in videos

Police shared the security photos and videos before receiving an anonymous tip, identifying Gough, who had a Severna Park address.

Another tipster, who said they worked with Gough at a dog kennel and recognized her in the videos, reached out to police. Her former employer told police that Gough worked at the dog kennel from September 2022 to September 2024, and that she was fired after she was caught stealing medication.

Homeowner speaks out after burglary

Last week, homeowner Sara Glasser told WJZ that the thief was caught on camera breaking into her home through a basement window. She called the incident violating.

"Honestly, like you move to the suburbs to feel that safety and just quietness, and to think that someone who shouldn't be there is in your space and touching your things, and with your pets, who you love deeply. It just feels very violating," she said.

According to Glasser, the suspect stole laptops, jewelry, a watch and a power drill from the home.

In the video, the suspect was seen moving around the home as Glasser's dog, Dewy, followed.

"I think at first [Dewy] was excited because he loves everyone, and then he quickly realized this is not a friend," Glasser said.
