D.C. Council OKs Taxicab Regulation Overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The District of Columbia Council has approved an overhaul of its taxicab regulations to make cab use more modern and rider-friendly.

The changes approved Tuesday would require credit card readers and GPS tracking devices in all cabs.

The number of handicapped-accessible cabs would be expanded, and cabs would also be asked to adopt a uniform color scheme.

Taxi drivers angrily voiced objections to the requirements on Tuesday and protested at the district government building.

Also Tuesday, Council members postponed debate over regulating Uber, a luxury car service with a growing following.
