Boys Recovering After Falling Into Well Near Rosedale McDonald's
ROSEDALE, Md. (WJZ) –-Dramatic rescue. Two boys fell and became trapped in a 30-foot hole outside a Rosedale McDonald's---and live to tell their story.
Rick Ritter spoke with both children and has the emergency calls for help.
Both boys were playing outside the McDonald's when they fell in that 30-foot hole. One was able to somehow climb out and run for help. Now he's being hailed a hero.
"I thought I was going to die," said Louis Gervais, who was one of the boys who fell in the hole.
Gervais and Makai McEachin are the two 11-year-olds who were swallowed up by a massive hole in Rosedale.
"It didn't feel real. It felt like I was just falling," McEachin said. "It was a dream."
The intense scene unfolded around 7 p.m. Sunday. The two boys were playing outside the Rosedale McDonald's when they fell into the 30-foot hole, which was covered with mulch and landscape fabric.
"It was dark. I could still see light, though," McEachin said.
It was a dire situation. Gervais couldn't move.
"I got scared because I didn't think I'd be able to get help," Gervais said.
McEachin desperately tried to climb out.
"I fell; I busted my head," he said. "The second time, I made it up," he said.
Covered in blood and dirt, he ran home to his family who called 911 and rushed to the scene to help Louis Gervais.
"He was so deep that his voice was very faint, like a whisper. I was like, `How deep is he in the hole?" said Mia, Makai's mom.
By then, the Baltimore County fire department arrived and pulled out the other boy.
Even though he's being hailed a hero, McEachin says he's thankful.
"I'm happy but that's not the point. I'm just glad we're okay," he said.
The fall could've easily been tragic.
"I'm happy he was there because if someone else was there and didn't know how to climb, we'd probably still be down there," Gervais said.
Both boys were left with some serious injuries and were taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital but they are expected to recover just fine.
Police say the hole is now covered with a steel plate for safety. They say the hole appears to be an old well and is the property of McDonald's.
