As Orlando Shooting Details Emerge, Focus Shifts To Prevention Of More Attacks

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As details begin to emerge following the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, the focus now turns to prevention -- fighting terror threats before they occur.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack inside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, but those claims are still being investigated -- an important note as questions linger whether this was the act of a so called "lone wolf" -- 29-year-old American citizen Omar Mateen -- or if it's part of a larger conspiracy.

It's now known that Mateen had been on the FBI's radar before the shooting.

Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell told CBS This Morning why the attack may have been difficult to prevent -- "The FBI literally investigates things like that thousands and thousands and thousands of times, they simply found nothing to follow up on to open up a bigger investigation."

Maryland Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger tells WJZ preventing these tragedies will come from more action and less politics.

"This is a serious fight that we have. They're trying to attack us and kill us, and we have to come together in Congress and make sure that we give the resources to protect our citizens and our community and our country."

Ruppersberger has also been adamant about gun control -- specifically the AR-15 assault style rifle, which has also been used in other mass killings.

"Enough's enough and we've got to act now," he says.

Experts tell WJZ that social media will also play a role in the fight against terrorism. The FBI believes Mateen may have been radicalized online.

"How do you get to that person?" asks former Assistant FBI Director Ron Hosko. "How do you predict that person? How do you defeat that person?"
