Lawmakers on calls for Noem to step down

Let's jump to the White House now, CBS News Correspondent Natalie Brand standing by there. Natalie, good morning. Based on what Ian just laid out in the CBP report, there was no continuous chain of command for the weapon. There was a discrepancy between what was on video and what Secretary Noem said happened. And now, you have all this pressure for her to step down, Democrats threatening to impeach, and some Republicans joining that effort. What's the latest on that front? Yeah, there's bipartisan criticism on Capitol Hill. And new this week, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader, says that Noem should be fired or else he'll move forward with impeachment proceedings. Now, keep in mind, he doesn't control the House. And a few Republicans would have to sign on, but notable that a growing number of House Democrats, around 160, support this resolution at this point to impeach Noem. And now, we've learned two Senate Republicans are also calling for her to step down, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Take a listen to their comments. She has taken this administration into the ground on an issue that we should own. We should own the issue of border security and immigration. But they have destroyed that for Republicans, something that got the president elected. They have destroyed it through their incompetence. I've lost confidence in her. I think we would be better served with new leadership at the department. While other GOP lawmakers have not, at this point, gone that far, a number are calling for an impartial investigation into exactly what happened regarding the shooting death of Alex Pretti. And now we know that the Senate Homeland Security Committee will hear testimony next month from the heads of ICE and CBP. Secretary Noem is also expected to testify before the Judiciary Committee in March. And while you heard President Trump say he doesn't believe she should resign or step down, we do know, as CBS News has reported, that there has been a lot of internal scrutiny over the shooting and the response to it, the statements made that Ian was referencing following the shooting death of Alex Pretti. And there are reports out there that Senior White House Advisor Stephen Miller, an immigration enforcement advisor, directed Noem to use some of the language that she did that has faced all of this backlash. We have a new response from Stephen Miller to CBS News. He says, "The initial statement from DHS was based on reports from CBP on the ground." He goes on to say, "We are evaluating why the CBP team may not have been following protocol." This is a significant shift from what he had said this past weekend following that shooting, when he labeled Pretti as a domestic terrorist, Errol.
