Wildfires Continue To Rage In Dry West Texas

LUBBOCK (AP) - Prayers for rain will be offered as Texas faces extreme critical fire weather conditions for more blazes in rural western parts of the state.

The Texas Forest Service says an outbreak of wind-driven wildfires, over portions of North Texas and farther west, is possible through Thursday.

Agency spokesman Alan Craft says a fire that's blackened more than 100,000 acres in Presidio and Jeff Davis counties was 60 percent contained Wednesday. More than two dozen homes and businesses in the Fort Davis area have burned since Saturday. Nobody has been hurt.

Tom Green County Commissioners issued a proclamation Tuesday encouraging people to pray for rain. Roman Catholic Diocese of San Angelo Bishop Michael Pfeifer is leading the 29-county diocese with prayers planned Sunday for rain.
