Very Hot, Very Dry Transition To August

By 1:00pm at DFW the temperature was again over 100 degrees. We are expecting triple digit highs all this week with near-zero rain chances.

The HEAT ADVISORY continues for the metro area. The advisory was expanded to the east this morning as the combination of heat and humidity will push the temperature to dangerous levels. The Heat Index will again hover just above 105°F.

We are going to close the month and start August with near record highs, getting withing a few degrees each day:

As we close July with a flourish of triple-digit highs (10 of the last 13 days if the forecast holds) we can seek solace in the past July. That was an historically hot month in 2011, a reminder that we've been through worse:

We enjoyed a wet winter and spring, this has helped in June in keeping the worse of hot weather at bay. Just compare the drought of last year with current drought conditions:

The drought this year has centered on the midwest and west. A near record amount of land in the lower 48 states is considered in drought status of some kind (64%), the highest since the dust bowl years of the 30's. This year's corn crop (the biggest cash crop in America and the largest corn crop in the world) is expected to fall to its lowest level in ten years.
