DALLAS (CBS11) — They began their careers 50 years ago at the Catholic Diocese of Dallas and now two of the longest running employees there are headed off into retirement.

88-year-old Steven Landregan and 78-year-old Tony Ramirez recalled when they first began work at the Diocese.

"I started working on a manual type writer," said Ramirez. "I never thought I would work with a computer."

"It was a couple of hours a day a couple of hours a week and I've been here ever since," said Landregan.

Both of their jobs have evolved over the five decades, but they both began as journalists for the Diocese newspaper, The Texas Catholic.

Landregan was recruited to come work at the Diocese. He gained nationwide recognition following the assassination of President Kennedy.

At the time, he was working as an administrator at Parkland Hospital and delivered the news to the nation during a news conference.

"What I said is that the president has expired the doctors will be here to answer your questions," Landregan recalled.

Landregan went on to hold many positions within the Diocese and retiring as the historian and archivist.

Ramirez who began as a sports writer for about 20 years will be retiring as the manager of advertising for The Texas Catholic.

He says the secret to having a 50-year career is enjoying the people you work with.

Both men have had their own front row seat to history meeting and sitting with some of the biggest news makers in our history.

Now as they look forward to retirement they are sharing their plans.

"I was given a guitar and five lessons," said Landregan. I will take my first one tomorrow morning."

Ramirez added, "We like to go to Vegas a lot...we're going to go see Jennifer Lopez."
