Tuesday, May 31 Forecast Discussion

90s CONTINUE…

We have had 5 days in a row of 90 degree heat and that streak will be extended for the next 7 days.  But there are some rain chances in the forecast.  They are small rain chances at best.

THIS EVENING…

A few clouds have moved into the area this afternoon and evening.  Some of these clouds are producing some light rain showers.  Nothing heavy and nothing widespread.  If you do see one of these showers it won't last very long and may produce just a trace of rainfall.  There is a cold front that is lying over Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle.  Storms will likely develop along that front in West Texas and Oklahoma later this evening.  These storms will stay north and west of Dallas/Fort Worth.  So outside of a few light rain showers this afternoon and evening, no rain is expected tonight.

UPPER LEVEL RIDGE DOMINATES…

A upper level high pressure system, often referred to as a Ridge, has established itself over the southeastern United States.  This ridge will move over Texas by the middle and end of the work week.  This will allow temperatures to warm into the mid to upper 90s on Wednesday thru Saturday.  This will also lead to slightly lower humidity as the air dries out in the lower levels as air from above mixes down to the ground.

WEAK UPPER LEVEL LOW…

A weak upper level low will drift into South Texas from the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and Monday.  These upper level features are called TUTT lows.  A TUTT (Tropical Upper Tropospheric Trough) is like an upper level disturbance coming across the Jetstream.  But these TUTT lows come from tropical regions and slowly meander with very weak steering currents to take them anywhere.  This systems can bring enough upper level support of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.  As mentioned, this TUTT is expected to move into South Texas.  But it may be close enough to North Texas to initiate a few isolated showers and thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday.  One thing that is will do is bring us a little more cloud cover and lower temperatures some.   Highs will only be in the low 90s on Sunday and Monday.
