3 People Hurt As Car Flies Off Airport Freeway
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS (CBSDFW.COM) - Three people were hurt, two of them seriously, after a car flew off Airport Freeway in North Richland Hills just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, landing in the parking lot of a hotel along the service road.
The 26-year-old male driver of the Infinity G-35 was not seriously hurt, but was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. Two female passengers were ejected during the crash and taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth via air ambulance, both with serious injuries. Their current conditions are not known, nor have they been identified.
"It was like an explosion, a loud boom," said Lucas Armstrong, the night manager at the Best Western Hotel where the car landed.
The westbound lanes of Airport Freeway, the adjacent service road and the exit ramp to Bedford-Euless Road were shut down starting in Hurst for several hours as police investigated the crash, said North Richland Hills police investigator Keith Bauman. The roads have since re-opened to traffic.
The driver was later identified as 26-year-old Frederick Douglas.
He was arraigned Wednesday morning on two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing bodily injury, which carries a $75,000 bond for each count.
Armstrong said he kept one of the women calm until medical responders arrived.
"I kind of kept her conscious and kept talking to her, you know, tell her everything was going to be OK," he said. "All of a sudden the police came about 10 to 15 minutes later and luckily we kept everyone responsive."
