EAST DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A father chased after a man who stole his truck while his son was still inside Monday evening at a gas station on the corner of Gaston and Haskell.
It's a parents worst nightmare caught on camera.
"I heard a man shout and I heard tires screeching really badly and looked out the window and I saw a truck pulling off," said witness Pawan Gharti. It's believed the driver left it unattended when someone got behind the wheel and tool off.
Gharti said the surveillance video is only the latest example of crime that he said has overrun the neighborhood. "This area is really bad. This neighborhood always has something happening… robberies, people getting shot… they should crack down in the crime," said Gharti.
Employees of the gas station said they couldn't believe what security monitors showed -- a frantic parent chasing after his kidnapped child.
"I had no idea it had a baby in it," says Gharti, "I figured it was something bad not something normal."
Even though the unidentified parent gave up the foot pursuit police stopped the truck only a block away and recovered the child unharmed. It's a happy outcome much to the relief of witnesses.
"Oh, did they now? That's an awesome thing," says Gharti.
Police haven't released the car thief's name. He faces a possible charge of kidnapping along with car theft.
