AUSTIN (1080 KRLD/AP) - The recent rise in the number of inappropriate student-teacher relationships in Texas has caught the eye of lawmakers.

In fact, Texas politicians have scheduled a hearing Monday to talk about that as well as the impact of social media interaction between teachers and students.

A training film is an example of the ongoing Ethic courses given to teachers by the Texas Education Agency.

Last year the TEA received 179 reports of inappropriate Teacher-Student relationships.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has asked the committee to review training and education of school employees in regards to proper behavior. He also wants to know whether there needs to be an increase in Texas Education Agency staff to investigate teachers, and whether penalties and sanctions should be adjusted.

State lawmakers will examine the TEA's current efforts and those of schools, law enforcement, and the courts to investigate and prosecute educators engaged in inappropriate relationships.
