Texas Parole Board Refuses To Stop Execution
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has refused to delay a Mexican national's scheduled execution this week.
Attorneys for condemned inmate Ramiro Hernandez-Llanas asked that his punishment be put off or his sentence be commuted to life in prison. The seven-member board Tuesday voted unanimously to deny the plea.
The 44-year-old Hernandez-Llanas is set to die Wednesday evening in Huntsville for the 1997 fatal bludgeoning of former Baylor University history professor Glen Lich. Lich had employed Hernandez-Llanas at Lich's ranch near Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country.
The U.S. Supreme Court last week refused to review an appeal in his case. The high court in a related case also rejected a civil rights lawsuit challenging use of a new lethal drug by Texas prison officials for executions.
