Texas City Council Member Picked By Dice

WEBSTER (AP) - A dice roll has landed a lucky candidate on a city council in the Houston area.

Diana Newland on Tuesday defeated Edward Lapeyre for a place on the Webster City Council.

Both ended up with 111 votes during a runoff election Saturday. Texas law allows for election ties to be decided using a coin flip or dice.

The candidates had to roll three times before a decision was reached. Their first throws went off the table. The second rolls came up tied. Newland then rolled a five, while her opponent came up with a four.

Webster is a city of about 10,000, located 20 miles southeast of Houston.
