KILLEEN (CBSDFW.COM) - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton weighed in after a Killeen Middle School censored a "Charlie Brown Christmas" decoration.
A Patterson Middle School staffer had placed the poster depicting a "Charlie Brown Christmas" on a school door. It showed Linus and the line from the Bible "unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior."
The principal told the staffer that the drawing could remain, but the biblical quote had to go.
Paxton called the move unlawful and, "an attack on religious liberty."
Many parents echoed his opinion, and the school came under attack from those who found the move unnecessary.
Killeen administrators argue school employees are not permitted to impose their personal beliefs on students, which is why they asked that the scripture be removed.
In the statement Paxton said if the school district changed course and complied with the law, the state would defend them against any potential lawsuit.
Killeen ISD will address the issue at its board meeting tonight.
