Teen Drowns At Lewisville Lake
CARROLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - An end of the school year celebration at Lewisville Lake turned tragic Saturday when a teenager drowned.
Witnesses told police 17-year-old Jaquis Jones of Dallas swam a short distance away from the boat slip; never to return.
"[He] swam a little ways away from the boat slip and was unable to get back,"said Denton county game warden Daron Blackerby. "Several of the people there tried to jump in and looked for him. They were unable to find him."
Fire department divers found Jones at the Pier 121 Marina and rushed him to Medical Center of Lewisville, where he was pronounced dead at 2:21 a.m., almost two hours after the incident was reported.
He was a junior at Newman Smith High School, where he was a defensive lineman on the Trojans football team.
"We are saddened over the loss of Jaquis Jones.," said Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District spokeswoman Angela Shelley. "Our hearts go out to his family and also to the fellow players, coaches, students and staff as they deal with the loss of their friend and classmate."
Friends and family held a memorial service for Jones at 8 o'clock on the football practice field of Newman Smith High School Saturday night.
At least five people have drowned in North Texas lakes in the last month.
