TCU's Rifle Team Is Right On Target
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Trying to hit a bullseye in the college sport of rifle shooting is like trying to hit a period at the end of a sentence from 33 feet away.
Members of the TCU Rifle Team are champions at it. "We've held our ground in TCU Sports, " Sarah Scherer said.
Scherer has been to the Junior Olympics before. So has Sarah Beard.
The TCU Rifle Team won the National Championship last year, an "all girls team" beating teams with boys.
Sarah Beard said, "Women tend to have more patience and they tend to listen better to people who give them suggestions."
This year, minus two graduating seniors, they came in third. Now Scherer, Beard and several other team members are now headed to the Junior Olympics.
Their coach, Karen Monez, said, "All their goals, whatever they set, they just reach for the top goal and they just hit that mark every time."
Dead center is 10 points.
Monez said, "Figure out what it takes to do it and you're trying to achieve that every time."
A team member has to hit it 40 times in a row to make 400. That's a perfect score. But the air rifle weighs 12 pounds.
To keep it from swaying, this reporter had to steady it on the stand. First shot was a 9. But the next shots weren't so lucky.
These girls are ultra disciplined. "It's a lot of mental training, a lot more than any other sport I can think of," Beard said.
The girls are sure to go far. Because as far as goals, you can be assured. They're right on target.
