Perspective might be needed to understand the general elevated mood you are likely seeing (and feeling) in the citizenry of north Texas today.
Just compare noon today with yesterday. Today at 12pm DFW sat at 79 degrees with a dew point of 48°. Twenty four hours ago the temperature was the inverse of that, 97° at noon with a dew point of 65°.
Yesterday is was yet another brutal summer day. Today it is fall.
Yesterday DFW Airport hit a high of 104 degrees, the second day of record heat and the SIXTH day in a row of 100 degree weather. If you are a resident on the Cross Timbers and you flip that calendar over to September you know what is inevitable but always seems slow to show: the first Canadian cold front of fall gets into the Southern Plains.
This is our signal that we have weathered the worst of that north Texas summer heat and, if it shows up again at all, will only linger a day or so before being again swept away on a north wind. Football, festivals and layers of clothes are our reward for making it through the gauntlet of summer heat.
Fall arrived last night just after 10pm, winds howled through the night as humidity and temperatures dropped. Lows this morning started in the upper 60's. Highs today will top out in the mid-80's. It'll be a perfect night for TCU football in the new stadium with a kickoff temperature in the low 80's.
Overnight lows will dip into the low 60's and upper 50's:
Highs tomorrow will rise into the upper 80's, around 90 degrees in the Metroplex. Sunny skies and less wind teamed with low humidity will make for a fine fall day.
Next week looks dry and on the warm side, highs will slip back into the mid-90's as winds turn back to the south.
The next cold front looks to arrive on Friday, providing a storm chance and cooler weather (in the 80's) for next weekend.
