Strong Cold Front Arrives, Ends Heat Wave
LEE SLOWLY MOVING INLAND
Tropical Storm Lee is packing 6omph winds, it stalled off the Louisiana coast for awhile this afternoon and now appears to be wobbling on shore in the Marsh island area and 60miles SW of Lafayette. Flooding and heavy rain continues to be a major issue with Lee. A tornado watch is also in effect for the area. Lee is felt (and seen) here in north Texas with some high clouds coming in from the east and a northeast wind. These winds have been rather gusty today, especially in our southeast which has hampered fire fighting efforts.
ONE MORE 100 DEGREE DAY TODAY…AND THE LAST
What a cruel, cruel summer its been but we've at least we've apparently reached the end of the it. Major weather chances ahead over the next 48 hours brings to an end the streak of brutal hot weather. Mother Nature just had to give us yet one more 100 degree day at DFW today but it looks more and more that its going to be the last one for a while. The current steak of 100 degree days ends at 20 days, tied at 6th on the list of most consecutive days. This record hot summer puts two (2) top-ten runs of 100 degree days on the list, one of 40 and one of 20. The annual total stops at 68, one short of the 1980 record of 69 days.
FIRE WEATHER WATCH TOMORROW
A strong cold front comes arrives tomorrow morning. Winds out the north really start to pick up by mid-day. We are expecting some clouds, a mere 10% rain chance and wind gusts around 35mph. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect all the way to Monday. As TS LEE slowly moves across La. And Ms. it will continue to create a large pressure difference; this means strong winds for us through the period. Even worse on Monday is that the dew points will drop down to the 30's: very dry air. Again, this is the recipe for grass fires.
ABRUPT END TO THE HEAT
Not only are we saying goodbye to 100 degree weather, 90 degree weather is leaving for a while! In the low 80's on Labor Day with lots of sunshine and brisk north winds. We had several nights where the overnight low didn't get below 83 degrees: this is going to give many of the air conditioners a rest. Overnight lows will be in the 60's, almost sweater weather in the comparison to our summer of heat. We'll be in the mid to upper 80's all the way through the short work week. We are not expecting any rain through this period.
