Soldier Convicted Of Interfering After Open Carrying Rifle In Central Texas
BELTON, Tex (AP) - A Central Texas jury has found a Fort Hood soldier guilty of interfering with a police officer after his arrest while carrying an assault-style rifle in public.
Jurors deliberated about two hours Tuesday in the Belton trial of Army Master Sgt. Christopher Grisham. The penalty phase of the trial is to begin Wednesday morning in a Bell County court. He could receive up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.
A Temple police officer responding to a report of a man carrying an assault rifle arrested Grisham in March.
Grisham was hiking with his 15-year-old son, who was working on a Boy Scout merit badge.
The officer has testified he worried about Grisham's reaction after approaching him.
