Snow Forecast For North Texas This Weekend

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A weak cold front will ease into the area throughout the day on Friday, but will have little impact other than a light north wind. Expect high temperatures in the 65-70 degree range, and a chilly overnight with mainly clear skies. Low temperatures overnight should be between 36 degrees and 41 degrees.

Saturday is our transitional day, as clouds begin to increase. Showers and a few storms will develop to the south of North Texas, but should not arrive in our area until after midnight, and most likely not until early Sunday morning. Look for high temperatures on Saturday to be in the 50s.

Sunday is really the day we'll all be watching. Rain should arrive between 4:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Sunday and continue throughout the late morning and afternoon. Temperatures will be near 40 degrees. Locally, heavy rain is possible just south and southeast of our main metropolitan area. Between 1.5 inches and 2.0 inches of rain could fall over areas like Waxahachie, Hillsboro, Corsicana, Kaufman, Canton, Athens, Fairfield and Palestine. And between 0.5 inches and 1.0 inches of rain are possible for our metropolitan region.

As the rain falls on Sunday, the air will cool to near the freezing mark along and north of the Interstate-20 corridor during the midday hours. Snow will begin to mix with rain north of the Interstate-20 corridor, with 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday being the time frame we'll likely see flurries.

Snow accumulation is possible by Sunday late afternoon and into the evening hours. Two factors will fight accumulating snow: wet ground and a warm ground temperatures. That said, if the air cools off rapidly enough, snow could come down at a quick clip -- enough to overwhelm these two factors and amount to slush on roads and will accumulate grassy areas. The favored areas for this scenario, again, are along and north of the Interstate-20 corridor.

How much snow are we expecting? There should be about one or two inches in Gainesville, Sherman to Bonham and Decatur, Denton to McKinney. And there could be as much as two to four inches from Bonham to Paris and Greenville to Sulphur Springs. Northern parts of Tarrant County and Dallas County, up into the southern portions of Denton County and Collin County, are looking at just less than an inch of snow.

But again, because of the fresh rainfall and warm ground, slush looks to be the biggest issue.

As the precipitation exits our region on Sunday night, the winds will pick up, which is expected to dry out most roadways by Monday morning's commute. The exceptions will be those areas to the north and northeast of our main metropolitan area, with lingering slush and snow on the ground and roadways. Temperatures are expected to be just below the freezing mark on Monday morning and, therefore, freezing on bridges and overpasses could be possible. Please continue to watch this situation throughout the weekend.
