Singers From Booker T. Give Star-Spangled NCAA Performance
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Before basketball history was made Monday at AT&T Stadium, a very talented group of singers took to the court.
The singers, who backed up Darius Rucker during the Star-Spangled Banner, were all from Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas.
CBS 11 News spoke with the teens about what may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
They are in perfect pitch and all selected to jazz things up after being selected to attend the prestigious Booker T. Washington School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
Now an entire community is singing the praises of a student jazz ensemble, based on a slam-dunk performance Monday night.
The NCAA Men's Basketball Championship game drew top billing, but right before tipoff there were the patriotic sounds of the national anthem.
Echoing through the stadium were the words, "O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?"
The students were performing in front of an audience of 80,000, as they provided a sweet melody to for Rucker's rendition on the National Anthem.
For four of the invited Dallas ISD singers, their response to the super-size singing opportunity was as improvisational as the jazz they usually scat.
High school singer Erika Morgan said, "It's pretty cool performing in front of all these people, and it's cool being in this environment, with all these musical people. It was great."
The opportunity was eye opening for singer Raleigh Jones. "It just opened my mind as to what can happen for me, what Booker T. has to offer," he said.
It was the reputation for talented performances that placed the students on a national stage – where they gave a Star-Spangled performance!
The group has also performed at the acclaimed Monterey Jazz Festival.
