Senate Panel To Discuss Education Overhaul
AUSTIN (AP) - A Texas Senate panel is set to discuss a sweeping overhaul of school curriculum and standardized testing already approved by the state House.
The Senate Education Committee on Tuesday gets its first official crack at House Bill 5, an omnibus education proposal approved last month in the lower chamber 145-2.
Designed to create greater flexibility for vocational training, the bill would allow students to earn a "foundation" diploma without taking upper-level math or science courses, including Algebra II.
It also would reduce the number of standardized tests students must pass in order to graduate from 15 to five.
A high-profile curriculum overhaul proposed in the Senate is similar in many ways. It too would no longer require Algebra II for graduation, while mandating that students pass just five standardized tests.
