Residents, Police Taking Action Against Cut-Through Traffic In Keller Neighborhood

KELLER (CBSDFW.COM) - With a home at the end of a long straight street, Jim Cheshire can watch drivers come right at him, and he does.

After years of being frustrated by speeding drivers, Cheshire started borrowing a police department radar gun to clock cars in his Keller neighborhood.

During a lunch hour last week, just three out of more than 50, were following the strict 20 mph speed limit.

"Somebody came through this intersection too fast to make the turn," he said. "They smashed right into our landscaping here and threw rocks all the way up to our front door."

Keller held its third public meeting Thursday on problems with cut-through traffic.

Most of the affected neighborhoods are bordered by Keller and North Tarrant Parkways to the north and south. Rufe Snow and Keller Smithfield surround them on the east and west. Cars try to use streets through the neighborhoods to get off the crowded main roads.

"You're always nervous when the kids are outside," said resident Cindy Sloan. "You have to really be careful and watch for cars and stuff, because there's a lot coming through."

Police have stepped up patrols in the area.

While CBS 11 was there Thursday an officer pulled over four cars in quick succession, handing out warnings each time.

The city is collecting resident statements to hand to a consultant. The company will work with city staff to come up with possible solutions.

Residents have asked for more stop signs, speed bumps, even closing down streets. The city council though will have to make a final decision.

Some residents are optimistic a widening project on Rufe Snow, scheduled to finish later this year, will encourage some drivers to stay on that road rather than cut through the neighborhoods.
