NORTH TEXAS (CBS SPORTS) - The Rangers and shortstop Elvis Andrus are discussing a contract extension, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman adds that $120 million is on the table but the two sides aren't close to an agreement. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports first reported the two sides were talking about an eight-year agreement.

Andrus, 24, would join Jered Weaver and Carlos Gonzalez as the rare Scott Boras client to sign a long-term extension in lieu of free agency. He is already under contract for both 2013 ($4.8 million) and 2014 ($6.475 million), after which he would hit the open market.

Originally acquired in the Mark Teixeira blockbuster with the Braves, Andrus has emerged as one of baseball's best all-around shortstops in recent years. He's a .275/.342/.353 (84 OPS+) career hitter who has averaged roughly 31 steals per season, and last year he hit .286/.349/.378 (91 OPS+) with three homers.

Andrus really shines with the glove, with both UZR (+29.3) and DRS (+23) rating him as well-above-average defensively in his four-year career. Add in tremedous durability -- zero career DL stints and at least 145 games played in all four seasons -- and you have one of baseball's best and most valuable young players. With nine figures on the table, the Rangers apparently agree.
