Peaceful Protests For Trayvon Martin in Dallas

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Thousands 0f peaceful protestors gathered Saturday in downtown Dallas at the Trayvon Martin Rally For Justice. It was one of many protests across the country just a week after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of the Florida teen.

"What happened to the Trayvon Martin case was injustice in general," one protestor told CBS 11 News. Zimmerman's acquittal on both murder and manslaughter charges has touched off the wave of protests.

They braved the heat in a show of solidarity; some even fainting. The rally was one of many taking place across the country. Many of the protestors have expressed that they want the federal government to now bring civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

"I came here today because this is something I've never done before and I think this is an awesome opportunity to be able to be part of a peaceful movement, not just for Trayvon Martin but for everybody world-wide," said Dallas resident Marlonda Taylor.

Rally speakers included John Wiley Price, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, and State Senator Royce West, who urged the crowd to also get involved with womens', immigrants', and gay issues as well as supporting African-Americans.

"We need to stand up and not only do we need to stand up, we need to stand up together," said Sen. Royce West.

Despite the large turn-out, it was a peaceful gathering and according to police, there weren't any arrests made.
