Guinea Pigs Abandoned at Animal Shelter
Arlington staffers are now scrambling to find homes to adopt the small animals who were left in the shade outside the building on Green Oaks near the Arlington municipal airport. Shelter manager Jay Sabatucci says they're hoping to find good homes for the guinea pigs which are popular pets, especially for children. They are also used in scientific and medical research, generally as models for human medical conditions like diabetes, tuberculosis and scurvy, along with complications of pregnancy. Half the animals were found outside the shelter before it opened Tuesday morning and the rest were discovered early Wednesday. Sabatucci says it's a crime to abandon animals at the shelter when it is closed. The small rodents are now available to adopt for seven-dollars apiece.
