NTTA Ready For Icy Roads Ahead Of Storms

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - January in November. North Texans are about to see a polar plunge. The arctic outbreak will bring the coldest temps of the season to North Texas next week.
One forecast model forecast possible snow! CBS 11 Chief Meteorologist Larry Mowry isn't promising any flakes, but crews will be covering dry roads across the metroplex before the cool down.
The North Texas Tollway Authority hasn't forgotten the thick sheets of ice that blanketed Texas roads last year. So this year NTTA is using a new weapon against the icy roads.
"What's new is something really kind of old school," explained NTTA's spokesman Michael Rey. NTTA's machine makes brine, which is a heavy dose of salt water.
"We'll put a fine spray," said Rey. It is similar to what most of us will use on our turkeys this Thanksgiving.
"When ice and snow falls on that it will mix together reactivate it and it will have a much lower freezing point. A mere 32 won't do the trick it will keep it liquid longer."
NTTA plans to treat the roads before any storms come in. And if all goes to plan crews will follow behind with sand.
The sand that is recycled from last year's icy mess. TXDOT also plans to use brine on highways as well.
